Step-by-step Procedure for Registering on the Income Tax Portal

By following the below-mentioned steps, you can open an account in the Income tax portal for yourself:

Step 1
Visit the e-filing portal homepage of the Income Tax e-filing website.

Click on ‘Register’.
Step 3
Enter your PAN details and select the category ‘Register as a Taxpayer’.
Step 4
Click ‘Validate’ If your PAN is already registered or invalid, an error message will appear on the screen.
Step 5
If no error message is displayed, you will be directed to the next page. On this page, fill in your personal details, such as Name, Gender, DOB, and Residential Status as per your PAN. Click ‘Continue’.
Step 6
On the next page, add your contact details, such as your Mobile Number, Email Address, and postal address.
Step 7
Note: Like any other OTP, this one has a time duration after which it expires. The OTP will be valid for only 15 minutes; a countdown timer will be on the screen for your reference. By clicking on ‘Resend OTP, ‘ a new OTP will be sent. You will get a maximum of 3 attempts.

Verify all the details; if all the details are correct, click on ‘Confirm’.

On the next page, you must create a password. Type the same password in the ‘Set Password’ and ‘Confirm Password’ text boxes. Enter your personalized message and then click on ‘Register.’

Tip – It’s crucial to create a strong alpha-numeric password of more than 10 characters.

This not only ensures the security of your account but also reflects your responsible approach towards online safety.

Step 10
A screen with the message ‘Registered Successfully’ will now appear. Find your User ID and save it for future reference.
Step 11
Click on ‘Proceed To Login’ to be redirected to the Income tax login page.

How to log in E-Filing Portal of Income Tax

Following are the steps to log in to the e-filing portal of Income Tax

Step 1
To access the e-filing portal, visit here. A text box will appear on the right side of the page.
Step 2
Add your PAN no. or, Aadhar no. or User ID
Step 3
Click on ‘Continue’. Enter your password and confirm your secure access message.

How to Reset E-Filing Portal Password — Step-by-Step Guide

Below mentioned steps is the procedure to reset your password on your e-filing status:

Step 1
Click this link to the Income Tax e-filing website.
Step 2
Find the ‘Login’ button at the top right corner of the page and click on it.
Step 3
Enter your User ID/Pan No./ Aadhar No. and click on ‘Continue.’
Step 4
Now a new page will be open; click on the ‘Forgot password’

On the new page, fill in your User ID and click on ‘Continue’

You will now be redirected to the ‘Reset Password’ dashboard, where you can select your preferred method of changing the password.

The options will be:

  • Using an OTP on a mobile number registered with an Aadhaar
  • Upload Digital Signature Certificate
  • Using e-filing OTP

In this article we will be discussing only the first method i.e using OTP on mobile number.

Select your preferred method and then click on the ‘Continue’ button.

Option 1: OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar

Follow the instructions if you have chosen to reset your password using OTP on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar

  • Select ‘Generate OTP’ on the next screen and click the ‘Continue’ button.
  • If you already have an OTP, select ‘I already have an OTP on a mobile number registered with Aadhaar’ and enter OTP.
  • Enter the six-digit OTP received on your mobile number and click the ‘Verify’ button.
  • In the next step, enter a new password in the ‘Set New Password’ text box as well as the ‘Confirm Password’ text box. Click on the ‘Submit’ button.
  • The password will be reset successfully.
