GST Board Format: What to Display at Your Business Premises

Summary:
A GST board format does not have a government-prescribed design or fixed size. Under Rule 18 of the CGST Rules, every registered person must display their GSTIN on the name board at the entrance of the principal place of business and every additional registered place of business. The GST registration certificate must also be displayed prominently at these premises.
You have completed your GST registration, downloaded your certificate and started issuing invoices. But one small compliance requirement can still be easy to overlook: what should you actually display outside your shop, office, warehouse or factory?
Whether you are a retailer, manufacturer, service provider, wholesaler or business owner, getting the GST board format right is fairly simple once you know what the law actually asks for. There is no elaborate government template to follow. We mainly need to distinguish between the GSTIN displayed at the entrance and the registration certificate displayed at the premises.
Let’s look at both.
GST Board Requirements at a Glance
| Detail | Regular taxpayer | Composition taxpayer |
| Business/name board at entrance | Yes | Yes |
| GSTIN on name board | Yes | Yes |
| Registration certificate displayed | Yes | Yes |
| Apply at principal place | Yes | Yes |
| Apply at additional registered places | Yes | Yes |
| “Composition taxable person” wording | No | Yes |
| Government-prescribed GST board size | No fixed size under Rule 18 | No fixed size under Rule 18 |
| Prescribed GST board colour | No | No |
The important point is not to overcomplicate the board. Make the required information correct, readable and visible.

Is a GST Board Mandatory for Registered Businesses?
Yes. If you are registered under GST, displaying your GSTIN at your registered business premises is mandatory.
Rule 18 of the CGST Rules contains two separate requirements:
| Requirement | What you need to display | Where |
| Registration certificate | GST registration certificate | Prominent location at the premises |
| GST name board | GSTIN | Name board at the entrance |
Both requirements apply to your principal place of business and every additional place of business registered under GST.
This means simply keeping a GST certificate on your computer or carrying a copy in your records does not replace the display requirement.
Similarly, displaying the certificate inside the office does not remove the requirement to show the GST number on the sign board at the entrance.
GST Board Format: What Should Your Sign Board Show?
One of the biggest misconceptions around the gst name board format is that businesses must follow a standard government design.
They do not.
Rule 18 requires the GSTIN to appear on the name board exhibited at the entrance. It does not prescribe a fixed template, background colour, font style or layout.
A practical board can therefore contain:
- Your business or trade name
- Your full 15-character GSTIN
- The label GSTIN: before the number
- Other business information you normally want on your signboard
For clarity, we recommend using GSTIN rather than abbreviating it in a way that customers or officers may not immediately recognise.
GST Board Sample for a Regular Taxpayer
A simple gst board sample could look like this:
SHREE ENTERPRISES
GSTIN: [Your 15-character GSTIN]
That is enough for GST purposes provided the GSTIN is clearly visible on the name board at the entrance.
You can continue displaying your logo, phone number, business category or other branding around it.

Is the Business Address Mandatory on the GST Board?
Rule 18 does not prescribe that the complete registered address must also be printed on that board.
You can include the address if it suits your business or signage design, but we would not describe it as a specific Rule 18 requirement.
Other local laws, municipal regulations or establishment-related signage rules may separately apply to your premises, so those should be checked independently.
What Is the GST Board Size Requirement?
There is no specific GST board size prescribed under Rule 18 of the CGST Rules.
The rule does not provide a minimum:
- Length or width
- Font size
- Colour
- Material
- Language
- Board design
So if you see recommendations such as a particular number of inches for a gst board size, treat them as practical design suggestions unless they are supported by a separate applicable local rule.
What matters under GST is that your GSTIN appears on the name board exhibited at the entrance.
From a practical perspective, we recommend making sure that:
- The GSTIN is clearly readable.
- The full GSTIN is printed without missing characters.
- The board is positioned where a visitor can reasonably see it.
- The text has enough contrast against the background.
- The board remains readable despite weather, dust or regular use.
A large shopfront may naturally require larger lettering than a small office door. There is no need to force both into the same dimensions.
Where Should the GST Sign Board Be Displayed?
The gst sign board format requirement applies to every place of business covered by your GST registration.
Principal Place of Business
Your GSTIN should appear on the name board at the entrance of the principal place of business mentioned in your GST registration.
Your registration certificate should separately be displayed in a prominent location at the same premises.
Additional Places of Business
The requirement does not stop at your head office.
Rule 18 also applies to every additional place of business covered under the registration.
For example, suppose your GST registration includes:
- Head office
- Retail outlet
- Warehouse
- Factory
You should not display the GSTIN only at your head office and assume the other registered locations are covered.
The GSTIN needs to appear on the name board at each applicable registered location, with the registration certificate displayed there as well.
What About a Home Office?
If your home address is declared as your principal or additional place of business under GST, the Rule 18 display requirement attaches to that registered place as well.
GST Board Format for Composition Taxpayers
Composition taxpayers have an additional display requirement.
Along with the GSTIN requirement applicable to registered persons, a taxpayer under the composition scheme must display the words:
“composition taxable person”
on every notice or signboard displayed at a prominent place at the principal place of business and every additional place of business.
GST Board Sample for a Composition Taxpayer
A simple format can be:
SHREE ENTERPRISES
GSTIN: [Your 15-character GSTIN]
COMPOSITION TAXABLE PERSON
The composition rules also require the words “composition taxable person, not eligible to collect tax on supplies” at the top of the bill of supply issued by the taxpayer. That is a separate invoice/document requirement, but it is worth checking when reviewing your overall composition compliance.
